Texture is one of the most fascinating and versatile elements of design. Whether in graphic design or tattoo artistry, texture plays a vital role in creating depth, emotion, and storytelling. As a graphic design student at Kaiser University and a tattoo apprentice under the renowned Torsten Malm, I’ve come to appreciate how texture transforms a blank canvas—whether digital or human—into a compelling narrative.

As a disabled veteran, my experiences have shaped my creative approach. I see texture as an artistic tool and a way to reflect life’s complexity. The interplay of roughness and smoothness, grit and softness, echoes resilience and healing—a theme that resonates deeply with my journey and the stories I aim to tell through my art.

What Is Texture in Design?

Texture is the surface quality of an object or image. It can be tactile (something you can feel) or visual (something that looks like it could be felt). In graphic design, texture is implied, giving flat designs the illusion of touch. In tattoo artistry, texture combines the visual illusion of depth with the physical interaction of ink and skin.

Techniques for Creating Texture

Graphic Design
In graphic design, texture is about creating an immersive experience on a two-dimensional plane. Techniques include:

1. Layering and Gradients - Gradients simulate depth by mimicking light and shadow, while layered textures build complexity. For example, a design might use overlays to create the appearance of crumpled paper or weathered wood.
2. Custom Brushes and Patterns - Digital tools like Photoshop and Procreate allow designers to replicate real-world textures, such as fabric, stone, or water. These brushes add realism and tactile appeal to otherwise flat designs.
3. Blending Modes and Transparency - Adjusting blending modes and opacity layers creates unique effects, such as soft, transparent textures or bold, high-contrast designs.
4. Negative Space - The intentional absence of texture can emphasize textured areas, adding balance and focus to a composition.

Tattoo Artistry
