20 Creative Uses for a Ballpoint Pen: A Graphic Design Student’s Perspective
As a graphic design student at Keiser University, I often find myself challenged to think creatively and push the boundaries of everyday objects. Recently, while working through Regina Pacelli's Whole Lotta Creativity Going On, I encountered an intriguing ideation exercise: come up with 20 "completely different from each other" uses for a ballpoint pen. This deceptively simple object turned into a launchpad for brainstorming and thinking outside the box. Here's where my creativity took me:
1. Writing and Sketching
Let’s start with the obvious—the ballpoint pen’s primary purpose. Whether it’s jotting down notes, brainstorming ideas, or sketching thumbnail layouts, the trusty pen is always by my side.
2. Precision Tool for Design Prototypes
In design, precision is key. A pen’s tip can be used to carefully outline details on paper prototypes or mockups.
3. Stylus Substitute
Wrapped in foil, a ballpoint pen can transform into a DIY stylus for touchscreens—great for last-minute edits on digital work.
4. Color Mixing Tool
While working with paints or inks, a ballpoint pen’s barrel can serve as a handy stirrer for small batches of mixed colors.
5. Typography Practice Tool
Its controlled ink flow makes it perfect for practicing hand-lettering and typography sketches, an essential skill for any graphic designer.
6. Creative Textures
Pens can create unique textures by rolling or dragging their textured grip across soft materials like clay or wet paint.
7. Marking Material
A ballpoint pen is ideal for marking fabric, cardboard, or other materials used in design projects.
8. Prototype Assembler
The pen’s barrel or clip can act as a makeshift clamp to hold parts of a design model together temporarily.
9. Leveling Tool
When sketching grids or layouts, the pen’s straight edge can double as a quick guide for alignment.
10. Stylish Hair Accessory
Ever stuck on a design idea? Twist your hair into a bun and secure it with your pen. Fashion meets function!
11. Emergency Weapon
While not something I’d recommend using often, a ballpoint pen could serve as a self-defense tool in emergencies.
12. Key Holder
Its clip makes a great temporary holder for a key ring, especially during busy studio days.
13. Bookmark
A pen placed horizontally across a page can save your spot in a design book or reference manual.
14. Mini Roller
The barrel can be used to roll out small amounts of clay or dough for model-making.
15. Keyboard Cleaner
The slim tip can help dislodge dust and crumbs trapped in your keyboard during late-night design sessions.
16. Texture Maker
Rolling the pen’s grip across soft materials creates interesting patterns—perfect for experimenting with textures in design.
17. Musical Inspiration
Tap it against your desk to create beats. Sometimes, rhythm can help break through creative block.
18. Projection Pointer
In group projects or critiques, a pen can double as a pointer to highlight elements on a physical or digital display.
19. Modeling Tool
Use the tip or barrel to shape and detail small-scale clay or foam prototypes.
20. Emergency Fixer
A pen’s cap or clip can tighten loose screws or fix small mechanical issues with design tools.
Reflection
This exercise reminded me that creativity often stems from seeing the potential in the mundane. A ballpoint pen isn’t just a writing tool; it’s a versatile ally in problem-solving and artistic exploration. For designers, the challenge lies in reimagining everyday objects and applying their hidden possibilities to enhance our work.
